ARTICLE 14

of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.

The Need

The world is seeing a record number of people fleeing their homes. US citizens most often encounter refugees merely through seeing news coverage in the comfort of their own homes. This impersonal interaction often leads to apathy or opposition. The voice of some citizens paired with the United States’ highly restrictive policies sends an unwelcoming message to refugees.

The Typography

Bebas Neue is a straightforward bold typeface in the Google Fonts collection. Its simplicity highlights the power of written text, both for good and for bad.

We chose the uncomplicated Bebas Neue so that people focus less on the typeface style and more on the consequences behind the words we type.

The ANSWER

The Anti-Home Store showcases the negative messaging that greets refugees seeking a home in the United States. The store reclaims these harsh messages to promote an important cause. Store visitors pay to remove the words. Their contributions help promote more welcoming policies and actions surrounding refugees in the United States.

Stickers

Each person who pays for an item in The Anti-Home Store will be sent a sticker to show support for refugees. It has The Anti-Home Store branding, but when peeled off, the "UN" will stay, leaving a large "WELCOME."

Interactive

When people scan the QR code, it links to a webpage explaining the United States' refugee situation. From that webpage, people can write their congressional representatives to support positive refugee policies. Each letter sent will reduce the opacity of the "NOT" from the display until it is completely removed. The webpage will also direct users to The Anti-Home Store product page, where they can help make the United States even more welcoming.
